CQ Hams Still Groovin' In The 60's

"The 1960s Pop-Rock Music and TV Shows Net" Roundup for October 2008

"The 1960s Pop-Rock Music and TV Shows Net" was held each week during the month of October with good participation. There were a lot of great trivia questions covering both '60s rock music and TV shows. Some of the questions forced members to reach far back into the memory bank and dust off some storage shelves to retrieve the correct answers. Shel, (K7SLS), you do remember "Shindig", don't you???

For the month of October there were 16 different hams that checked into the Net with five making the "PA" (Perfect Attendance) List.  Those stations were: K7DMF (Dave) in Vail, N7PHX (Jim) in Tempe, K7SLS (Shel) in Phoenix, K1ATV (Bill) in Mesa, and KE7FQL (John) in Phoenix. Way to go, guys. You are awesome! Your regular participation is what helps make for a strong and vibrant net.

Durinng this months Net, two significant music announcements were made - first, the passing of Levi Stubbs and the second concerning the recent release of Dion's new album, "Heroes:Giants of Early Guitar Rock". It was very sad to note the passing of a giant from 1960s R&B music, Levi Stubbs, lead vocalist of Motown's The Four Tops. Buy the end of the decade, The Four Tops had over a dozen hits to their credit. The most popular of the Four Tops hits, all of which featured Stubbs on lead vocals, include "Baby I Need Your Loving", "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)", "It's The Same Old Song", "Reach Out I'll Be There", "Standing In The Shadows Of Love", "Bernadette", "Still Water (Love)", and "Ain't No Woman (Like The One I've Got)". The Four Tops were elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, and have sold over 50 million records worldwide.

Dion, who dominated the charts in the '50s and '60s with such hits as "A Teenager In Love", "Runaround Sue", "The Wanderer", and "Abraham, Martin and John", just released his new album, "Heroes: Giants Of Early Guitar Rock" to pay tribute to the early rock and roll pioneers who helped develope perhaps the most popular and influential music genre of all time in the U.S. Through the album, Dion, now 69, wanted to help younger generations of rock fans understand and appreciate the significance of the work of such greats as Cliff Gallup, the Burnette brothers, James Burton, Scotty Moore, Gene Vincent, Ricky Nelson, Elvis Presley, etc. The CD features Dion's take on songs including Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues", the Everly Brothers' "Bye Bye Love", Presley's "Jailhouse Rock", and Big Joe Turner's "Shake, Rattle and Roll".

G.T.O

Clarke (KB4VYM) stands proudly next to his 2004 Pontiac G.T.O.

I would like to focus the spotlight on KB4VYM (Clarke) this month as the featured ham of the October Net Roundup. Clarke lives in Tucson and is our Net's resident "'60s Hot Rod Music expert" and classic cars enthusiast. Pictured left is a photo of Clarke with his 2004 Pontiac GTO, a "set of wheels" he is very proud to call his own. This racey red car has a 350 cubic inch, 5.7 liter engine that moves it up and dawn the streets of Tucson in rather short order. Clarke's ultimate goal is to purchase a classic '60s GTO and really "be cool". Is it any wonder his favorite Hot Rod rock hit is "G.T.O." by Ronny And The Daytonas? I don't think so!

On October 4 the 1st Annual Fall '60s Nostalgia Net Luncheon was held at a restaurant in Casa Grande. There were a total of 10 members in attendance along with several spouses. Everyone enjoyed their meal, but more importantly had a great time of fellowship with other Net members. For many, this was the first time to personally meet other '60s Net participants aside from on the air. A spring luncheon in March or April is currently being planned. Pictured below is a photo of the group.

Listed below are the music trivia questions for the month. Give them a try and see if you are a 'Novice', 'Technician', 'General' or 'Extra' when it comes to '60s pop-rock music.
