Just as the ghost of Christmas past in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, I look back to those Christmases of the
past every year during the holiday season. I recall most of all the white ones, although it doesn't seem like there were that
many.
What I remember most is my mother making our favorite candy and cookies. I can still smell the cocoa fudge boiling
on the stove and the divinity she made with walnuts. There was nothing like a Christmas in the sixties.
The stocking were hung on a door knob or nail because we had no chimney or mantel. The stockings were always filled with knit
knacks and of course fresh fruit and nuts. Many of my friends would get toys in their stockings.
The tree was a genuine Christmas tree. It was not an artificial one as probably 80% of homes have
today. The aroma of the pine was evident throughout the house. Trimming the tree was a family project where everybody chipped
in. The old fashion bulbs and icicles had to be hung perfectly. I recall how I got tired of hanging the icicles and just tossed them
on the tree until my mom corrected me very quickly and firmly. Do you remember the bulbs? When one burned out the entire string
went out. Then the fun began trying to determine which was the bad one. It was usually the one in the back of the tree that was very
difficult to reach.
Also what sticks in my memory bank were the Christmas specials on TV like, The King Family Christmas Special, Andy
Williams Show, The Dean Martin Show, Lawrence Welk, Perry Como and Mitch Miller. You just don't see any of those type of
programs anymore. Now in many places it is politically incorrect to say Merry Christmas. What a shame! I still wish them a Merry
Christmas anyways.
I recall on the last day of school before Christmas break which then was called Christmas vacation (now winter
break), we had a Christmas program presented by the school's music department. Singing Christmas carols was not taboo then and I
thought the program were superb for most part. It was a big deal then. Try and sing Christmas carols in a public today.
The music of the season was so prevalent then. I recall Bobby Helms, Jingle Bell Rock, Brenda Lee's,
Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree, Bing Crosby's, White Christmas and who could forget Elvis' Christmas album. I
still have the old LPs of some of these old Christmas songs. Now I have them on CDs but, there was something magical about putting on a
stack of LPs on the stereo and let them play as you decorated the tree. Even today I would rather to listen to the old Christmas tunes then
what is out there now. You can just call me an old geezer or just old fashion, but there was nothing more magical then Christmas during the
sixties.
